What does a remap actually do?
Your engine is controlled by a small computer, the ECU, running the settings it left the factory with. Those settings are deliberately cautious, because the same engine is sold in countries with worse fuel, worse servicing and hotter climates than ours. A Stage 1 remap rewrites those settings for the engine in front of us, so it delivers what it was built to deliver. No hardware changes, nothing bolted on.
How long does a Stage 1 take?
Between one and two hours. Some places will do it in 30 minutes, but that's a file flashed with no checks. We run diagnostics, a boost and smoke test and live logs before we write anything, then log the car on the road afterwards.
Is your software genuine?
Yes. We use Autotuner and Alientech KESS3, both on genuine licences, with Alientech's own tooling behind them. Cloned tools are the number one cause of bricked ECUs and we don't touch them. Zero bricked since 2020.
Will the reg lookup work with a private plate?
Yes. We look up the DVLA vehicle record behind the registration, not the plate itself, so a private or cherished plate comes back as the right car. If anything looks off you can pick the car manually instead.
Do you come to me?
Yes. Mobile is free across Birmingham and Walsall. Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas carry a small call-out charge, which we tell you about up front. Or bring the car to our Walsall unit.
What is the Three-Step Pre-Map Check?
Step one, air filter off and a look at the intake. Step two, smoke through the intake to find splits and leaks. Step three, a road run watching live data. It's normally a job on its own, and it comes free with the remap. If it finds something that makes tuning a bad idea, we tell you and you don't pay.
What's the free coding for VAG and BMW?
Features the factory switched off, switched back on. Things like needle sweep, cornering lights, comfort closing and the like, depending on the car. It's normally a separate job and it's thrown in with the remap for the next 8 cars.
Is it a generic file off the shelf?
No. We read your ECU, back up the original, and write the file around your engine, mileage and how you drive. Then we log it to make sure it's delivering what it should.
Can it be reversed?
Yes. Your original map is kept on record and can be put back at any time.
What warranty do I get?
A lifetime ownership warranty on the remap. If anything with the software needs attention while you own the car, we sort it.
Will it affect my fuel economy?
Driven normally, most turbo diesels see the same or slightly better economy after a Stage 1, because the engine makes its torque lower down and works less hard. Drive it hard and it'll use more, like any car.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes. A remap is a modification and you should declare it. Some insurers don't mind, some add a small premium. We'd rather you know that up front.
What about Stage 2?
Stage 2 is for cars with hardware fitted, such as a decat, downpipe or intake. Those files are custom built and logged on your exact setup. Start with Stage 1 and ask us when you're ready.
